Yellowstone National Park (West)

*** No 2026 Yellowstone Park (West) retreat ***

These retreats are based out of West Yellowstone with daily bus trips to beautiful sites in Yellowstone National Park.  Artists, Daniel & Kara Hidalgo, are your hosts and will be offering guidance as well as driving and cooking for you. The Yellowstone West entrance features mountains with valley vistas, waterfalls, steaming hot springs, bison and elk.  We will be painting as the first fall colors arrive!

Yellowstone Park (West) Info:     Leaders  |  Lodging Info

WHAT IS INCLUDED? Lodging (some private rooms, some shared rooms and shared bath, kitchen, outdoor porch), all meals, and bus transportation to/from Yellowstone Park locations.  Participants are responsible for their own transportation to/from the airport (Idaho Falls, Idaho is 1.5 hr away or Jackson Hole, WY is 3 hrs away) and to/from the West Yellowstone lodge.

SMALL GROUP RETREAT (not a workshop)
There will be 11 art participants total, including the two hosts, Idaho Art Lab co-founders, Daniel and Kara Hidalgo.

SPECIAL PRIVILEGES
Yellowstone requires groups of artists to have permits and Kara and Daniel have painted in the park for over 10 years and are authorized permittees of the National Park Service.  They know the best views, parking and times to see the Park.

INSTRUCTION
There will be NO formal lectures or instruction. There will be advice from 2 leaders if you need it (Daniel and Kara). This is mostly about people painting together for camaraderie and sharing the experience of creating art on location, en plein air. In the morning we will drive into the Park to paint.  Daniel or Kara will be walking around to offer advice or painting alongside you.  Lunch is provided as a brown-bag on location with an informal 'show and tell' of our morning paintings. Then, we'll do quick stops at one or more locations on our way back to the lodge for photo reference or memory studies. Evenings are on your own while we prepare and serve a dinner.

COVID PROTOCOLS
We want to keep you safe and, as a non-profit, we must follow CDC Guidelines.  The permit we must have to host this retreat also requires us to follow National Park Services guidelines.  By joining this retreat you agree to comply with any CDC Guidelines provided for Gallatin County, MT (found here) as well as any National Park Services guidelines, found here.

This year we offer TWO Yellowstone Park retreats! The second Yellowstone offering will be lead by Daniel & Kara Hidalgo through the Yellowstone Forever Institute at Lamar Buffalo Ranch in the northern part of Yellowstone Park (info HERE).
